A medium-difficulty cycling route, suitable for MTB and gravel bikes, through a captivating forest reserve that will enchant you.

The Pian degli Ontani Biogenetic Nature Reserve is one of the most enchanting places in the Pistoiese Mountains. Spanning approximately 500 hectares, it is managed by the State Forestry Corps. Located within the Sestaione stream basin, it is bordered by a ridge featuring expansive meadows and pastures, with peaks such as Poggione (1761 m), Pizzo Alpestre (1743 m), and Monte Uccelliera (1656 m) rising above.

The trail starts from the parking area near the La Villa hotel, where a fountain is available to refill your water supply, though there are additional springs along the way.

The route begins with an uphill stretch on asphalt leading to the forest entrance. The first 3.5 km take you to the Lippi Refuge (not managed), also known as Lagacciolo, named after a small stagnant water pool a short distance away. This section of the trail, with its excellent surface, is popular with hikers, so caution is advised, especially on blind curves.

From the Lippi Refuge, you can choose to complete the loop clockwise or counterclockwise; the described route follows the clockwise direction.

Continuing, you’ll encounter a gentle climb leading to the “muraglione” (big wall), where a pedestrian path begins and cuts through the loop. The following descent toward the Balzo del Cinghiale (Boar’s Leap) has a wide and pleasant surface, but it may be slightly uneven, particularly on the curves.

After the Balzo, the trail gradually ascends again, reaching the Cecchini Refuge (not managed), where you’ll find a spring known for its fresh and high-quality water.

From this point, you can take an optional climb of about 1 km, which is quite challenging due to its steep gradient, leading to the well-known Prato Bellincioni. If you prefer to skip this detour, you can continue to the final climb of the route, the Balzi Bianchi, which brings you to the highest point of the trail at 1360 meters. From here, the descent to the Lippi Refuge begins.

The return follows the same path as the outbound route. The flat sections offer an opportunity to recover from the effort of the climbs and fully enjoy the shade and coolness of the tall forest, making it a pleasant escape even on the hottest days.

Riserva Naturale Biogenetica di Pian degli Ontani

The Riserva Naturale Biogenetica di Pian degli Ontani is an area of great natural value established to preserve and enhance the habitat of monumental beech forests. These forests originated from the conversion of woodlands that were once used for charcoal production, which was employed in the numerous ironworks in the area.
