Part of the Ecomuseum's Sacred Art Itinerary, the museum includes the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, the Diocesan Museum, and the Sacred Art Educational Center.
The Itinerary of Sacred Art and Popular Religion of the Ecomuseum of the Montagna Pistoiese is centered around the charming village of Popiglio and is divided into three sections.
The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, founded in 1271, was enriched in the 16th and 17th centuries with valuable Roman Baroque art pieces, donated as ex-voto by a family of Popiglio residents living in Rome, the Vanninis. Inside, it features a precious pipe organ made by the papal organ builder Giuseppe Testa and paintings of great historical and artistic value, including works by the Veronese artist Sebastiano Vini and a Crucifixion by Giacinto Gimignani, a painter favored by Pope Clement IX.
The Diocesan Museum houses precious garments worn during liturgical ceremonies, silverware, and sacred furnishings, as well as the Chapel of the Compagnia del Santissimo Sacramento, which displays valuable sacred vestments from across the Montagna Pistoiese, silverware, and liturgical furnishings.
Not far from the Museum, on Via delle Corti, is the Sacred Art Educational Center, where children can engage in weaving workshops using small looms.
